What's your advice to others considering a career in Civil Engineering?

Get an internship or cadetship as early as you can. Even if it’s a day a week. It’s invaluable for building experience and relationships which are both crucial in this line of work. It also helps with the culture shock of starting in the real-world which is very different to textbook engineering! 

Be realistic when chasing money. Some FIFO salaries seem too good to be true and they often are...you need to consider the length of the contract, if there’s any guarantee of future work, and whether you’re paying for your own travel and accommodation which is often the case.

Camping, four-wheel driving and boating. My favourite spots are Bribie Island and Fraser Island. I’m looking forward to having more time to do this now I’m not studying full time as well as working! And with the FIFO roster I’ll have more time to explore.
